About Stefan Eisele

Stefan Eisele Portrait

I search for the texture that algorithms weren’t designed to produce. Specifically, the rust, the erosion, the weight of material – rendered by a machine that has never touched a surface. Because of my background in industrial design, I understand how materials behave: how steel weathers, how paint cracks, and how surfaces carry the memory of time. Consequently, I use that knowledge to push generative AI toward something it resists – the impure, the heavy, the tactile.

In practice, my work lives in the gap between digital precision and physical decay. During the process, every image passes through dozens of iterations, manual corrections, and conscious decisions about what stays raw and what gets refined. Yet the machine consistently proposes clean surfaces – so I drag them toward friction. As a result, what emerges carries the tension of both worlds – algorithmic clarity haunted by material memory.

The Work

For instance, in my series “Rust Orange and Dim Blue,” I explore digital materiality – AI-generated surfaces that feel like oil paint, clay, or weathered steel. Meanwhile, “Handcrafted AI Slop” turns the dismissal of AI art into a question: if everything generated is worthless, can intention and craft exist within the algorithm? Furthermore, the latest body of work, “Recursive Identities,” examines how identity forms and dissolves through endless cycles of transformation.

Ultimately, each series circles the same core: not whether machines can make art, but what happens when you force them to remember the physical world.

Background

Over the past years, my work has been published in the AI-ARTS.ORG Annual Collection 2024, shortlisted for the Hamburg AI Creators Award, and I was nominated as Lead Creator at the 4th AI-ARTS Competition 2025. Furthermore, my works “Unstable Realities” and “Conformity” were selected for the first two issues of SIXFINGERS, the free monthly AI art magazine published by IIIIL. In addition, as the first AI artist featured in TRUMPF’s pARTgallery, I brought generative art into industrial communication. At the same time, I work as 3D Visual Artist at Mercedes-Benz – a practice that sharpens my eye for precision and fuels the creative tension in my independent art.
