An exploration of identity through the lens of algorithmic transformation

“Recursive Identities” examines how identity forms and reforms through endless cycles of transformation. Using generative AI, this series visualizes the paradox of self: we are simultaneously constant and ever-changing, defined by patterns that repeat yet never quite replicate.

The Concept: Identity as Recursive Process

The series explores a fundamental question: What remains of identity when it passes through infinite iterations? Each work in “Recursive Identities” presents organic forms that echo and transform themselves—structures that seem familiar yet alien, recognizable yet impossible to pin down.

This recursive quality mirrors how we experience identity: each day we wake up as “ourselves,” yet we are subtly different from who we were yesterday. The works make visible this invisible process of continuous becoming.

Visual Language: Organic Forms in Digital Space

The characteristic rust orange and dim blue palette creates an atmosphere of warmth and distance, intimacy and alienation. These colors—drawn from my ongoing “Rust Orange and Dim Blue” series—evoke both biological processes and digital artifacts.

The forms themselves suggest cellular structures, neural networks, or perhaps alien organisms. They are simultaneously microscopic and cosmic, internal and external. This ambiguity is intentional: identity exists at every scale, from the molecular to the social.

Technical Approach: Controlled Chaos

Created with ComfyUI and Z-Image Turbo model, each piece emerges from carefully designed workflows that balance human intention with algorithmic unpredictability. The process involves:

  • Custom LoRA training for consistent color palettes and organic textures
  • Iterative refinement across multiple generations
  • Post-processing with Gimp for final color grading

Part of a Larger Practice

“Recursive Identities” continues my exploration of the Rust Orange and Dim Blue series, which was selected for the AI-ARTS.ORG Annual Collection 2024. This ongoing body of work investigates how algorithmic processes can reveal patterns of transformation, growth, and decay that parallel human experience.

As a nominated Lead Creator at the 4th AI-ARTS Competition 2025, I continue to develop work that bridges technical precision and conceptual depth, making visible the invisible processes that shape our understanding of self and identity.
